The biggest crowd so far this season was treated to Oxford’s best performance to date as our students put 6 tries past professional outfit Bristol RFC on a perfect night for running rugby. Man of the Match and left wing Tom Stileman caused havoc all night, scoring 4 himself, whilst number 8 Will Wilson and a penalty try rounded out the scoring.
The first half was evenly contested, with Stileman and Wilson crossing for the Blues whilst former England U20 international George Perkins struck back for the West country side. However, a yellow card to lock Ollie Adams just before half time swung momentum back to Bristol and they punished this discretion, with two tries from driving mauls either side of the break, putting the score at 17-19 with 35 to go and all to play for.
But the remainder of the game belonged to the students as their forwards began to dominate and unleash Stileman along with the rest of the back line. A breathless and punishing 30 minutes saw the Blues score 24 unanswered points as they began to give an indication of the potential within in their squad. A disappointing finish saw Bristol score in the last few minutes but even that could not take the gloss off what was an historic night for OURFC.
This puts the Blues at 6 wins from 7 games so far this season and maintains their unbeaten home record. On Monday current BUCS super rugby leaders Northumbria visit Iffley looking to be the first away side this season to leave victorious. Having lost only the one game so far all season this should be the toughest match for the blues to date. After almost 2 thousand people packed out the ground last week a massive crowd will be needed yet again as the build up to December 7th progresses ever quicker.
