There are now only 4 weeks to go before one of the most hotly anticipated events in the Oxbridge sporting calendar: The Varsity Match. Watched by more than 25,000 spectators and over 500,000 television viewers around the world, this is a spectacle you won’t want to miss.
The Men’s Varsity Match looks set to be finely poised, as always, with the Dark Blues returning to Twickenham eager for revenge after last year’s loss. They’ve been in fantastic form so far this season, recently seeing off a professional club in Bristol RFC along with some of the best uni teams around the country. Meanwhile, the squad up in Cambridge has struggled against similar opposition, notably undergoing a heavy defeat at the hands of Trinity College Dublin; a side OURFC beat only a few days later.
The overall series is in its 136th year, with the record currently standing at 62-59 to the Tabs. Men’s Captain, Conor Kearns, will be leading his phenomenally talented squad out on Thursday 7th December fully believing that they can close that margin to 62-60.
OURFC Women enter the Varsity Match as reigning champions of the fixture, recording a fantastic victory last year to overturn a heartbreaking defeat the year before. This positive momentum seems to have carried through, with the women recently thrashing Gloucester 46-0 and showing huge character against a Cardiff Met team packed with international calibre. However, their Light Blue counterparts are also in electric form, scoring 234 points in their 3 games this season and conceding none. One thing is for sure: this is not going to be an easy one to call…
This series is in its 31st year, with the record here standing at 19-11 to the ladies in Dark Blue. Women’s Captain, Sophie Behan, will be doing everything in her power to improve on that exceptional record and break the 20 wins barrier at Twickenham.
